WOMEN’S EMPOWERMENT
“There is no hope of rise for a family or nation where there is no
estimation of women, where they live in sadness.” - Swami Vivekananda
Empowerment is the process of giving power to individuals, in
this process women are part of it. Women need empowerment to uplift of their
economic, social, political and educational status. Since ancient times the
status of woman has not been improved so much, it is mainly because of our
patriarchal societal culture. Almost same or ill kind of treatment can be seen
in nearly every nation’s history against woman, for instance the USA the most
advanced nation in the world today allowed its women to exercise their
franchise in 1920 only, before this they were not a part of electorate to elect
their representatives. Razia Sultan became the first woman ruler of Delhi
Sultanate in the history of India, she was not only elevated at highest
position of the Delhi but also preferred over all her brothers on based of her
abilities, India never seen this before such elevation of a woman through whose
hand all power and authority were derived.
In the past, woman position in the society was not recognized;
she was deprived from participation in almost every major and important social activity,
while she always stood with the man to support him in all circumstances. But to
some extent this modern society recognized her role and felt now that she is
going to be treated as an important stake holder in our social development and
its formation. Inclusion of woman in the society is a part of natural justice
to her, without her, society is unbalanced and incomplete.
So, our eminent Constitution framers judged the role of woman in
a society and therefore they incorporated special laws and made many provisions
for woman upliftment, for instance Article 15 of the Constitution guarantees
that no citizens can be discriminated on ground of sex, Article 15 (3) under
which, states are authorized to make special provisions for women and child development,
Article 16 provides equal opportunities for all citizens in public employment, Women have been given
one-third reservation in Village Panchayats and Urban Municipal Bodies,
Ministry of Women and Child Development has been created as a separate ministry
for taking concerns of women and children. National Commission for women,
Rashtriya Mahila Kosh and many more autonomous bodies are also formed for improving
women position in our country.
Flooded of so many laws and provisions are attributing the
importance of women in our society. This importance is felt due to their
incomparable resilience & traits that they posses, women are helpful to bind
societal forces in stronger manner but need of the hour is empowering them
from all dimensions. For instance Savitri Bai Phule, she married at the age of
nine only, she knew the role of women in a society therefore, she fought
against many social odds and gender inequalities for girls education. She
opened first girl school in Bhide, Maharashtra and therefore, she is recognized
as a great social reformer in that region but this could only be possible due
to support from her in laws, particularly from her husband Jyoti Rao Phule.
In the field of science, Marie Curie, polish born scientist,
became the first woman scientist who got Nobel prize twice for two different
science subjects physics and chemistry .Another name from mountaineering is
Bachhendri Paul, after many opposition from her relative and family, she stick
with her mountaineering passion and became first Indian woman to climb on Mount
Everest in 1984. Capt Tanya Shergill just became the first woman in the country
who led all men contingent at the parade in Rajpath on 71st Republic
day and created history that a woman can lead the men by her valour and
leadership quality. Kiran Bedi cracked most prestigious exam and became first
IPS officer. So, we have many such examples that shows women are too talented
and have worth.
Many countries of Africa or Arab, where laws are more restricted
for their women, they usually confin them at home only, but their culture is also changing, they are coming out from home for jobs, some women even running
their business from home, they are sending their girls out for education.
According to world economic forum report of 2012 Gender Gap Index women in
Jordan, Egypt, Algeria, Saudi Arabia, and Lebanon outperformed their male
counterparts in the literacy and educational enrollment rates.
Indian women’s all around growth and development in terms of
their health, economic, polity, power and authority have been too envisaged
through different programs, one of them is Sukanya Samridhi Yojana it gives economic
support to a family, it is helpful to afford education expenses of its girl
child, even deposited money can be used for her marriage on completion of 18
years age. So girls are turning more in numbers to schools, parents are
supportive, such programs are helpful as well as giving opportunities to women
to recognize their rights and developing themselves. Many programs are helpful
in making women entrepreneurs and providing them the platform to selling their
products and services, “Mahila Haat” is one such program under Ministry of
Women and Child Development. Women are becoming more creative and economically
establishing themselves. Women health is also being taken care by Govt Program
like “Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana” launched in 2016. Under this
programs expecting, lactating and pregnant women workers are being served for
their health through a certain amount of fund transfer so that they could
fulfill their nutritional need and keep themselves fit.
Politically women are also being empowered through political
system of the country, Pratibha Devi Singh Patil is one of the examples before
us, she became first woman President of our country, Indra Gandhi became first
woman Prime Minister, Meera Kumar became first woman Lok Sabha speaker. as
women participation is increasing in Lok Sabha, this house presently has
fourteen percent women representation comparatively mere four percent in 1951-52 Lok
Sabha election.
By being in every sector of society they have showed their
abilities but in our country’s respect they are not proportionately
representing the women community, its main causes are our traditional
practices, patriarchal domination on women and lack of education. Additionally,
women are not freely and fairly treated in our society they are most prone to
violence in our society, according to report of National Crime Record Bureau in
2015 there were 3,29, 243 crores of crimes registered against women in dowry,
murder, social atrocities and etc. while in 2017 these crimes went up to
3,59,849. it was expected that after Nirabhaya rape case in 2012, many
amendments were introduced in redefining criminal laws of such crime so that
mental trauma of this kind that impacted particularly women or widely on our
society could be redressed, as Chief Justice of India SA Bobde himself asserted
that despite of such actions, data did not reveal any desired results, and in
2017 the rape crimes were went up to 32559 across the country.
Despite of such negative and discouraging data, wamen are daring to come out to
fight against their rights, Central government and state governments are
committed to improve women condition by making many women centric laws and
programmes. Along with such governmental programs our traditional practices
need to be changed and head of the family, presumably man, need to come forward
for women education of his family. In rural sector more vocational training
centers & professional Institutes should be established so that women could be
imparted learn some skill and knowledge and could produce articles or generate
services by themselves and become financially reliant, even could be saved
themselves from those clutches who pretending offer them job in cities and
indulge them in human trafficking. Empowering woman is providing natural
justice to them and then only our society can experience peace and flourishing.
On 8th March 9, 2020, on women’s day our Defense minister said
without women participation 5 trillion dollar economy cannot be achieved. It also
shows in future women would have greater role in our nation building.
